The Winter Skin Struggle Is Real
I can't speak for everyone, but I can definitely speak for myself and winter can sometimes feel like my skin’s worst enemy. There have been countless moments where my skin would randomly develop dry patches, itch from dehydration, and quite literally feel like it was falling apart. That dryness, tightness, and dullness is so real. Like many of us, I went through endless products in hopes of bringing my skin back to life. And while I did come across a few that worked, there’s one in particular that completely changed the game. But before I get into it, let me explain why our skin in winter always feels worse than the usual...
Did you know that a lack of moisture is the main reason why our skin feels so much worse during cold weather? Let me break it down. It might sound like common sense, but truly, when the air’s humidity drops, your skin loses moisture much faster than it does in the warmer months. That dry, crisp air essentially pulls hydration right out, leaving your skin drier, tighter, and more prone to irritation.
Not only is this caused from the outside air, but:
- constant exposure to heating systems
- taking hot showers which contribute in stripping natural oils from your skin
While there are many factors that can contribute to dryer skin, these would be the most common.
Why Castor Oil Deserves a Spot in Your Beauty Routine
Castor oil is notorious for its incredible versatility. Not only is it one of the few oils that can be used both topically and orally, but it's often combined with other oils to enhance their effectiveness. Rightfully known as the health and beauty industry's master carrier oil, it’s become a core ingredient in countless products. From skincare to haircare, and even the latest trend taking over social media: navel pulling. Thanks to its deeply hydrating and nourishing properties, castor oil continues to prove why it deserves a permanent place in every beauty routine.
the benefits of castor oil for winter skin
Deep Hydration & Barrier Support
Castor oil is unique in that it's one of the very few oils able to penetrate the dermis, the second layer of the skin. What makes it even more special is its ability to carry essential oils and other nourishing ingredients deeper into the skin, allowing them to work more effectively. Thanks to its molecular structure, lighter molecular weight, and high concentration of ricinoleic acid, castor oil has earned its title across the health and beauty industries as the master carrier oil.
Soothe Dry, Irritated Patches
Because of it's hydrating qualities, it's proven to be very effective for dry and irritated skin. I am the first person to vouch for this. My skin in the winter is the 'driest of them all', but after consistently using castor oil, my skin has never looked more plump or hydrated in the coldest of seasons.
Restore Radiance & Glow
Just as effective in combating dryness, castor oil works to restore the skin’s natural radiance delivering the glowiest of glows. Whether used on the face or body, it can take your skin from feeling dull and depleted to plump, juicy, and fully revived. Thanks to its thicker consistency, castor oil forms a protective barrier that locks in moisture, keeping your skin hydrated for longer and defending it against harsh winter weather.
The Versatility of Castor Oil in Your Winter Beauty Routine
Overnight Hydration Mask
Don’t do this… unless you want the softest, plumpest skin you’ve had in a hot minute. Castor oil doubles as one of the most effective and nourishing masks you can give your skin. And the best part? It’s so affordable. Instead of spending hundreds on masks that may or may not deliver, castor oil comes through every single time. Simple, powerful, and budget-friendly? It’s a no-brainer.
Hand, Nail & Cuticle Saviour
As someone who’s dealt with VERY dry hands (and no, not just from doing the dishes), I can confidently say that castor oil works miracles. I’ve tried my fair share of hand creams and moisturisers, and nothing has come close. And if you’ve been dealing with weak, brittle, or dehydrated nails? Enter: castor oil. A few drops massaged nightly into your hands and cuticles can make all the difference.
Scalp & Hair Care
If you’ve ever seen a girl or influencer online with the most luscious, healthy-looking hair, chances are, castor oil had something to do with it. One viral video I came across featured a DIY hair oil blend from a girl with the most beautiful hair, and sure enough, castor oil was one of the main ingredients. As mentioned earlier, castor oil is known as a carrier oil, which means it helps amplify the effects of other oils when used together. It doesn’t just sit on the surface, it brings the entire blend to life.
Brow & Lash Nourishment
While you're mixing up that hair oil concoction, make a little extra for your lashes and brows. Just as castor oil stimulates hair growth on your scalp, it can do the same for your brows and lashes. If you’re after fuller, healthier-looking lashes, this is one ingredient you don’t want to skip.
Lip Balm
Now, I’ve gotta admit, my all-time favourite lip balm slash lip mask is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. Nothing quite compares. But will castor oil help soothe and hydrate chapped lips? Absolutely. While you’re applying it as an overnight mask for your face or body, don’t forget to lather a little on your lips too. It delivers deep hydration and makes a great alternative when you’ve run out of your holy grail product (or just want something more natural).
How to Use Castor Oil for Best Results
When To Apply
For best results, applying castor oil overnight is ideal. Because of its thicker consistency, it can feel a little sticky and let’s be real, no one wants it rubbing off on everything they touch. Using it before bed gives your skin uninterrupted time to absorb all those nutrients while your body is naturally resting and repairing.
That said, I’ve personally used castor oil during the day and had no problem with it especially when it’s freezing outside and my skin is desperate for all the moisture it can get. It’s all about what works for you.
How Much To Use
A little definitely goes a long way. But I’m not one to hold back when it comes to nourishment. Since castor oil is naturally thick, it can be a bit tricky to spread without working it in a little more than usual. When applying it to the skin, be as generous as you feel your skin needs.
However, keep in mind cleansing your skin regularly is crucial to prevent clogged pores. We want to work with our skin, not against it. While it does have hydrating and nourishing qualities, it can potentially make your skin worse if not used wisely.
That said, be more mindful when using it on sensitive areas like your eyelashes. Because of the texture, applying too much can cause it to seep into the eyes and cause irritation. So while castor oil is absolutely worth indulging in, it's one of those products where a mindful application makes all the difference.
Things to Keep in Mind
Choose High-Quality Castor Oil
One important note that’s often overlooked: not all castor oils are created equal. I recently came across an article that highlighted something many people miss (including myself). Even if a bottle claims to be hexane-free, if it’s stored in plastic, it can still compromise the oil’s purity. Over time, chemicals from plastic can seep into the oil, reducing its effectiveness and long-term benefits.
For best results, always opt for organic, cold-pressed castor oil stored in a glass bottle. This ensures you’re getting the cleanest, most potent version. Exactly what your skin deserves. Shop some of the best products below for your hydrated winter skin routine.
Storage & Shelf Life
Generally, castor oil lasts up to about a year. However, the better your castor oil quality the longer it can last. Some even up to 5 years. Be mindful of how and where you store it. It's recommended to leave in a cool, dry place and avoid leaving in a refrigerator.

Side Effects
Lastly, it’s important to remember that castor oil may not work for everyone, and that’s completely normal. We all have different skin types and sensitivities, so always patch test before applying it more broadly. While castor oil is a natural product, it can still cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals.

Simplicity Wins in Winter Beauty
Why Less Is Sometimes More
I often get asked what my skincare routine looks like in winter. And to be quite honest, it’s usually just castor oil or a really intense moisturiser. With social media constantly throwing around extravagant 10+ step routines, it’s easy to feel like you’re not doing enough. But here’s the truth: winter skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.
While cleansing and the occasional exfoliation are important, you really just need a few good staples. I recommend a rich moisturiser like Weleda Skin Food for daily hydration, castor oil overnight to lock in moisture and revive your skin barrier, and a gentle cleanser to ensure your pores stay clear. Add in a chemical or physical exfoliant once or twice a week to keep things fresh, and that’s honestly it.
As they say, babies and men often have the best skin. Mostly because they keep it simple. And that’s the point: your skin can absolutely glow with just a product or two, as long as they’re the right ones.
Lastly...
In a world full of overcomplicated routines and overflowing skincare shelves, it’s refreshing to go back to basics, and castor oil is one of those timeless, powerful ingredients that proves less really can be more. Whether you’re treating dry winter skin, brittle nails, or dullness, its versatility is unmatched.
But if you're looking to take that glow one step further, especially for daytime hydration and radiance, I highly recommend pairing your minimalist routine with something like the d'Alba First Spray Serum. A lightweight yet deeply nourishing mist that layers beautifully over or under skincare. Think of it as your dewy skin companion to castor oil’s intense overnight care.
